Jean Bourdichon served as official court painter to four successive French kings: Louis XI,
Charles VIII, Louis XII, and François I

Anne de Bretagne (1477–1514), Duchess of Brittany, was twice Queen of France, the first time by marrying Charles VIII in 1491 and the second time, after his death, by marrying his successor, Louis XII, 8 years later.

A pious monarch, she ordered the famous artist Jean Bourdichon (1457–1521), to richly adorn an Horae ad usum romanum
