Stage is set for Python to win the full Monty

When Eric Idle suggested turning Monty Python and the Holy Grail into a stage musical, his fellow Pythons were not sure. Yesterday, Idle had the last laugh after finding the Holy Grail of theatreland.

Monty Python’s Spamalot, the irreverent Arthurian romp complete with dancing divas, killer rabbits and a legless knight, gained seven nominations for the Laurence Olivier Awards.

Tim Curry, who returned to the London stage after an absence of more than 20 years to play a goofy King Arthur, was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical. Hannah Waddingham was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, and Tom Goodman-Hill was listed for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical. The other nominations were for Best New Musical, Lighting, Set and Costume design.

The Oliviers, presented by the Society of London Theatre, are the highlight of the West End calendar.
