Mater Dolorosa

It is said of Deger that he "lived in religion, had a profound conviction of the nobility of his art, and painted what he felt, believed and hoped."
He was only twenty-one when his "Pietà" brought him fame, and thenceforth he devoted himself to religious painting.
The Seven Sorrows of Mary are:
at the prophecy of Simeon;at the flight into Egypt;having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem;meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary;standing at the foot of the Cross;Jesus being taken from the Cross;at the burial of Christ
Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) wrote two oratorios dedicated to The Seven Sorrows of Mary (1703) and (1717). Here is an extract from one with an aria sung by Sara Mingardo: "Il mio figlio dov'è", "My son, where is he ?"
