Pietro Orioli was the pre-eminent painter of his generation in Siena at the end of the fifteenth century.
There are parallels between Orioli's work and the non-realist style of the Florentine Sandro Botticelli
He died young, and was lamented for his artistic talent and for his exemplary piety. He is known from documents to have been a particularly devout individual.
His family owned rural property near Capriola, at least two of which properties were left to the Monastery dell`Osservanza in Siena. This was the Convent of St Bernardino of Siena
He himself is buried in the Basilica dell`Osservanza in Siena
The Image of S. Bernardino (above) corresponds to the image of S Bernardino in the Osservanza in Siena.
